On December 18, Mississippi State will play Virginia Tech while Georgia Tech takes on Richmond a specially designed 4,200- seat arena. Deemed “The Battle at Atlantis,” this doubleheader will not only showcase four renowned programs, but create a one-day event unlike any other seen at Atlantis.
This inaugural event is just the first in what Atlantis is hoping is an expanding basketball tournament series. Should Atlantis be granted NCAA exempt status, it would expand the doubleheader into an eight-team tournament next year, while also offering $3 million in scholarship funding to a participating team.
“When we decided to get into college basketball, we said let’s make it the biggest, most fantastic event ever,” says George Markantonis, president and managing director of Kerzner International Bahamas. “We know these teams will create an energy and excitement here that is unparalleled. It will be a sports experience unlike any other in a beautiful resort destination, something we are confident our guests and college basketball fans around the nation will love.”
Located in the 50,000- square-foot Imperial Ballroom the half-million dollar stadium will offer state-of-the-art facilities for the players. For the fans, there will be past player appearances and over-the-top prizes, including a series of high-stake half-court shots with payouts in the six figures.
